Dopamine Chamber album cover – Fontaines D.C.'s fifth album (XL Recordings, 2026)

On October 16, Fontaines D.C. released their fifth album, Dopamine Chamber, via XL Recordings. The follow-up to Romance (2024), again produced by James Ford, it is the band’s most ambitious project to date: eleven tracks blending synths, trip-hop rhythms, strings and post-punk, set in a world designed to keep us hooked. We have already covered the album announcement and its first single, “Marianne,” as well as the collaboration with Rosalía. Now let’s look at what the rest of the record has to offer.

The sound world is the album’s greatest success. Dopamine Chamber pushes the electronic turn of Romance much further, with cold synths, mechanical rhythms, string arrangements and deep, pulsing basslines that recall bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure. The production is rich and full of detail, which really comes out on headphones.

Grian Chatten’s writing fits the album’s concept perfectly. The record deals with the dehumanisation caused by technology, the loss of context on social media and the loneliness that follows. What stands out right away is the quality of Chatten’s vocal performance: his singing keeps maturing and is genuinely impressive.

The album is best appreciated as a cohesive whole rather than as a string of standalone tracks. Some listeners may find it lacks a clear direction, with a synth-led opening, a guitar-driven middle and a cinematic, string-laden finale. Others may feel that part of the band’s identity, rooted in its Irish origins, has been lost. Still, this is an album that may need more time than Romance to reveal itself fully, and it ultimately confirms that Fontaines D.C. remains one of the most compelling bands around.

Dopamine Chamber is an ambitious record. Those who loved the guitar-heavy sound of the Dogrel era will find less to hold on to. But those who followed the band into the electronic textures of Romance will find, in this album, the boldest outcome of that evolution yet.

Fontaines D.C. is featured on our Cool stuff and Alt playlists.
