On July 28th, guitarist Cory Wong and saxophonist Joshua Redman released On A Random Tuesday: Live At The Blue Note, an eight-track document pulled from Wong's week-long residency at the legendary New York club. Nearly an hour of music, captured live, with none of the studio polish, just two serious players working a groove in real time.

The pairing might look unlikely on paper: Wong made his name in the funk world through Vulfpeck and his own instrumental records, all "Wong-chops" and relentless pocket. Redman, on the other hand, comes from a jazz lineage as pure as it gets, son of saxophonist Dewey Redman, a fixture of the genre since the early '90s. But that's exactly what makes this record work. Trade the studio arrangements for a small stage and a live room, and the two traditions meet somewhere in the middle: tight, funky, and loose enough to actually stretch out.

The album leans on the band's chemistry as much as the two names up front, keyboardist Taylor Eigsti, bassist Yohannes Tona, and drummer Petar Janjic all get real room to move, especially on the longer cuts like the ten-minute "Brixton Underground." Opener "Bogatell" alone runs close to nine minutes, which tells you where the priorities are: this isn't a tidy studio-length set, it's musicians following where the night actually took them.

Nothing algorithmic about that either, just a room, a week of shows, and two players willing to see what happens when jazz technique meets funk discipline live, on an ordinary Tuesday that turned out not so ordinary.
